Agora Open Air Museum
Overview
Agora Ruins, located in the historical Kemeraltı region of Izmir, is a central point hosting the administrative, social, cultural and religious activities of the ancient city of Symrna during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. M.S. Agora Ruins, dating back to the 2nd century, are named with the word "Agora", which refers to the city square, bazaar and market place. It was built as a three-storey structure in accordance with the Hippodamos city plan and is the largest and best preserved among the Ionian agoras.
The first excavations were carried out by R. Naumann and S. Kantar between 1932 and 1941, and these excavations focused especially on the northwestern part of the building. Later, short-term excavations were carried out on behalf of the Izmir Museum between 1996 and 1998, and were restarted by the museum in 2002. Agora Ruins is a well-preserved historical heritage site that stands out among the Ionian agoras known for its historical riches.
