Alaçatı Wetland Area
Overview
Çeşme Alaçatı Wetland is a lagoon-type estuary of approximately 250 hectares. It is a natural waterway where the tide-controlled stream meets the sea. The Aegean Sea is on the southern border of the area, and the Kutlu Aktaş Dam is on the northern border. While salt marshes and small beaches surround the area, the general vegetation consists of a rich variety of scrub areas. This fertile plant community is home to rare plant species such as the endemic Teddy bear, White Rock Rose and Neotinea lactea. Plants such as seaweed and Wickerwort provide feeding, shelter and breeding grounds for birds. The wetland has a rich bird life, with important species such as stilts, fantails and golden plovers being seen throughout the year, especially flamingos.
