Overview

The museum, which was established in 1929 as a warehouse to store the artifacts found as a result of excavations that started in the 19th century in the Selçuk Ephesus Ancient City, was expanded by adding a new section in 1964. In the following years, it took its current form with exhibition changes and new additions. Starting from prehistoric periods, important works from the Mycenaean, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods are exhibited in the museum. In particular, two world-famous statues of Artemis of Ephesus are located here. The history of the city dates back to the 5th millennium BC and is known for being an important port city. Ephesus, one of the important political and commercial centers of its period with its geographical location, was considered the capital of Asia Minor during the Roman period. The artifacts found in the excavation area bear cultural traces of Roman influence in the Eastern Mediterranean.
